What Foods To Eat During Your Period (Menstruation)

Constipation What Not To Eat For 10 % of younger women, the time of the month when they have their period is a nightmare. Daily activities are interrupted or not accomplished at all due to the discomforts that these women experience during menstruation. It is unfortunate that some have to pop dozens of pills which do not work effectively. During a period, there are so many changes taking place with a woman's hormone levels that lead to such symptoms as cramps (dysmenorrhea), headaches, bloating, vomiting, wooziness and the worst is PMS (premenstrual syndrome). The foods consumed either during or before a woman's period contribute to her feelings, moods and body metabolism. If you have a problem with menstrual cramps or some the discomforts mentioned it is worth consider eating or avoiding the following foods as mentioned:

Eat plenty of calcium and magnesium rich foods

Calcium rich foods affect nerve communication and blood vessel opening and closing in the body. Ease blood flow during a woman's period is important because it reduces the discomfort experienced, like menstrual cramps. The body consumption of calcium during a period (menstruation) is high, so if not enough is consumed it might result into problems like osteoporosis since the body uses up the calcium stored in the bones. Proper blood flow during a period also reduces bloating. Most people know that dairy products like milk and cheese are the main sources of calcium, but women who do take dairy products can eat other calcium rich foods like soy or rice milk, tofu and kale, lots of fruits and vegetables.

Eat high fiber and low-fat carbohydrates

Some people have the wrong impression that crabs are not good for their health; everyone needs carbohydrates to provide energy for body function. The type of carbohydrates one chooses to incorporate into their diets is the problem. Simple carbohydrates like sugar are quickly absorbed into the body and stored as fat which might cause bloating during menstruation. Eating high fiber carbohydrates ensures slow digestion; hence most of the energy produced is used up in the body's metabolism. A lot of energy is used up during a woman's period, and when there is not enough, blood supply to the brain is reduced so enough is supplied to the uterine walls leading to feeling sleepy during the period. Some high fiber and slowly digestible foods I recommend include lentils, whole grain bread, oatmeal, lima beans and black beans. Some low carb carbohydrates to avoid during your period include mushrooms, canned foods and pre-packaged foods. Low carb foods lead to low serotonin hormone levels which is the main cause of depression and PMS during menstruation.

Eat foods high in Iron

During a period normal women lose between .5-1 cup of blood, which needs to be replenished to allow proper body functioning. Iron is the main mineral in red blood cells, which are important for oxygen transport in the body. Low oxygen supply to the brain is the main cause of headaches, nausea, vomiting and dizziness during your period. Some iron rich foods include: liver, mussels, oysters and clams. Some vegetarian options include asparagus, pumpkin seeds, blackstrap molasses, and beans.

Eat moderately spicy food

Spicy food improves blood circulation; hence reducing the problem of bloating during menstruation. Be careful not to eat a lot of spicy food because excessive amounts can cause problems like stomach ulcers. Some moderately spicy foods include jalapeno pepper.

Avoid high sodium foods

It is normal to have cravings for certain foods during your period, but you have to be careful not to eat foods with high sodium levels because this is the main cause of bloating and constipation during your period. Canned foods like pickles and certain brands of crackers have as much as 200gms of sodium per serving. Excess sodium consumed leads to water retention in the body which causes bloating and discomfort during menstruation.

Limit the number of eggs you eaten during your period

Many women have discovered production of awful smells in their vagina after eating eggs. Trust me, the odor produced from the blood produced during menstruation is embarrassing and discomforting enough; you do not want to add the smell of rotten eggs to that!

Eat more fish
