Best Foods To Avoid Constipation Irritable bowel syndrome (usually abbreviated to IBS) is a disorder that can be extremely inconvenient for its sufferers. The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome include feelings of pain and discomfort in the stomach, swelling of the abdomen, diarrhoea, constipation and nausea. However, by knowing which foods to avoid with IBS, many of these symptoms can be reduced if not avoided completely.

As most people are aware, the food you eat determines the type and regularity of bowel movements. Therefore, there is a long list of foods to avoid with IBS once you have been diagnosed with the condition. Indeed, the reason that IBS develops in the first place may be because of the kinds of food that you have been eating so the key to recovery is often identifying them and cutting them out of your diet. However, the following are common foods to avoid with IBS.

Whole wheat products are one of the main foods to avoid with IBS. This is because whole wheat contains fiber which affects the metabolism rate and therefore your bowel movement. In general, those with IBS should avoid any foodstuff that alters the rate of metabolism. The same goes for high-fat foods that can trigger irritation of the bowels. So fatty foods - burgers or hot dogs with onions for example - are definitely foods to avoid with IBS.

Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt are also pretty high up on the list of foods to avoid with IBS. Dairy contains whey protein and casein which the body has problems digesting (soy alternatives are fine).

As mentioned before, fatty foods are best avoided and that includes red meat so burgers and steaks are definitely off the menu. The same goes for c arbonated drinks, which includes most draught and bottled beers. As well as fatty foods, another group of foods to avoid with IBS is anything that has been fried. There is obviously an overlap here with fried, fatty foods like burgers but also for example fried eggs. Indeed, it is best to avoid eggs generally if you suffer from IBS as egg yolks can trigger an onset of the condition.
